Couches are not easy to assemble, but they are easy to take apart.

This is a question that I am asked on a regular basis. The answer is that most couches do come apart and it is possible to reassemble them. The process usually takes about an hour or less if you have the right tools and know-how.

Can a couch come apart?

Whether you want to throw it out without having to rent a dumpster or you can’t get it to physically fit through the door, it’s possible to take it apart yourself. This way, once it’s broken down into smaller pieces you can move it or throw it away with ease.[1]

What do you do if your couch doesn’t fit through the door?

Tip it on its end. Moving a couch vertically can help it fit through a door when there’s limited space to manoeuvre on either side. This method might mean dragging it over the carpet strip or doorframe, so be careful not to scratch or tear the fabric.[2]

How do you determine if sofa will fit through door?

Compare the width of your doorframe with the height of your sofa allowing some wiggle room either side. This will determine if we can take the sofa through on its side. If the door width is greater than the height of your sofa, then it will fit through.[3]

Do all couches break in?

The couch at the store had the benefit of being broken in by many shoppers, while your new furniture feels stiff to the touch. The cushions on your couch will soften over time, but if you want to speed up the process, try a few tactics to compress the foam insert and loosen its fibers.[4]

What size couch fits through a door?

If the couch is either 29 inches high or deep, it can usually be moved horizontally through a door because interior door openings are usually 29 1/4 inches wide and exterior door openings 35 inches wide, including door stops.[5]

How do I take my sofa apart for moving?

Fitting a sofa through a window opening is usually easier than fitting it through a doorway, since windows can be up to a foot or two wider. The removal process itself is straightforward, and we’ll re-install your window on the same day.[7]

Are all sofa legs removable?

Some sofas have solid frames where the front and back legs are part of the frame system. This means the legs don’t come off. Other sofas have back legs attached to the frame and removable front legs. This can sometimes give you enough clearance to maneuver the frame around and through exterior and interior doorways.[8]

Will a 3 seater sofa fit through a door?

The sofa’s length will need to be shorter than the door’s height. Also check the entrance way to see how much room you have to maneuver – there should be at least a foot or more of space on either side of the doorway in order to shimmy the sofa through. If the inside space is a narrow hallway, the couch may not fit.[9]

How do you work out if furniture will fit?

Open your front door as wide as possible and then measure from the inside of the door frame to the edge of the door. If A (door width) is greater than either H (Height of sofa/sofabed) or D (Depth of sofa/sofabed) then your product will fit in fine.[10]

How do I get my couch upstairs?

Instead of trying to lift the sofa yourself, use a dolly to aid in moving it up the steps. The wheels make it easier to cart it up the stairs. You will still have to use some muscle, but far less than if you had to lift it while moving upward.[11]

What is the average lifespan of a sofa?

Sofas: Consider replacing your sofa before the seats start sagging to the point of not supporting you, the fabric has become stained and worn, and the frame is breaking down or squeaking. How long should a couch last? On average, a typical sofa lasts between 7 and 15 years.[12]
